New data from the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center shows credential attainment rising and shifting earlier in the student lifecycle. The latest “Undergraduate Degree Earners” report finds more than 3.4 million people earned an undergraduate credential in 2024–25, a 3.2% increase over 2023–24. For the first time, students ages 18–20 made up the largest share of first-time associate degree earners (32.6%), and completions among 18–20-year-olds rose 47.7% compared with a decade ago. The report also documents growth among younger students, including under-18 learners completing their first associate degrees. The clearinghouse attributes the timing shift largely to expanded dual enrollment, while noting certificates are also rising across age groups. The pattern has immediate implications for advising, curriculum planning, and transfer pathways as more students complete credentials before traditional college-age milestones.
