AI systems used in education and related services are facing renewed privacy scrutiny after reports that users’ shared Claude conversations appeared in public Google search results. The issue affected chats where users used Claude’s “share” feature, which is intended to send a conversation snapshot to another person. Reddit users reportedly identified a Google-search method that surfaced lists of shared Claude conversations, including sensitive information such as cryptocurrency wallet keys, names, addresses, and other personal details. Anthropic said it does not provide chat directories or sitemaps to search engines and that shared links are discoverable only if users choose to share. The company reportedly fixed the issue, but previously exposed links remained live and reachable for users with the link. For campuses adopting AI tools for student support and coursework, the incident raises operational questions about data handling for shareable content, third-party indexing, and secure-by-default design.
