A new American Association of Colleges and Universities report finds that open educational resources can improve student outcomes beyond cost savings, with the strongest impacts tied to completion. The study analyzes 700,000 student records across 15 institutions and includes interviews with 240 faculty. Courses using free materials were associated with lower withdrawals, more A grades, and faster time-to-graduation for community college students, particularly when OER was customized for specific course contexts and student populations. The report also warns that adoption can require shifts in teaching practice, course design, and professional identity. Implementation support is central: institutions that do not provide guidance for adapting OER are least likely to see gains, and faculty time, financial compensation, and accessibility-alignment support are repeatedly flagged as drivers of success.
