Even as President Donald Trump’s plans to close or dismantle the U.S. Department of Education face scrutiny, NPR reports that the department’s student loan operations are hiring. The Office of Federal Student Aid (FSA) is adding around 380 new workers after the agency lost about half its staff in a reduction-in-force. FSA is responsible for communications with millions of borrowers and for administering core systems tied to repayment planning and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The internal hiring documents suggest the operational needs of the federal student loan portfolio are not being scaled down in the near term. For campuses and student service organizations, the staffing changes may affect call-center capacity, processing timelines, and the pace of policy implementation—especially around FAFSA and borrower communications during upcoming academic cycles.
