A new UNCF study found many high‑school students lack familiarity with Historically Black Colleges and Universities, narrowing postsecondary options before applications begin. Researchers surveyed students, teachers and counselors across seven high schools and found while most educators reported some HBCU knowledge, more than 60% of students said they were only slightly or not at all familiar with these institutions—gaps most pronounced among Hispanic and White students. Counselors cited heavy caseloads and limited classroom time as barriers to proactive HBCU outreach. The report calls for increased teacher and counselor engagement, targeted counseling, and in‑school exposure to HBCU representatives to diversify students' college consideration sets.
