A new UNCF study finds many high school students lack meaningful exposure to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), with over 60% reporting little to no familiarity. While most teachers and counselors said they were somewhat familiar with HBCUs, fewer than 30% reported incorporating HBCU outreach into lesson plans and only 8% discussed admissions processes in class. The report identifies counselor caseloads and inconsistent college advising as drivers of the gap. For campus enrollment and access officers, the findings imply missed recruitment opportunities and the need to expand K–12 partnerships, virtual visits, and targeted counselor training to diversify applicant pools and support historically underrepresented students’ pathways to college.
