A federal lawsuit filed in Houston challenges a Texas A&M University System policy that prohibits advocacy of “race ideology,” “gender ideology,” and other concepts in core courses. The American Association of University Professors (AAUP) joined four faculty plaintiffs who say the rule led to course cancellations and forced professors to remove “disfavored” topics from syllabi. The complaint alleges the policy functions as a “prophylactic ban” on politically disfavored speech, violating professors’ First Amendment and due-process rights. It also criticizes a content-review mechanism for being subjective and allowing inconsistent enforcement across the system. AAUP’s Texas cases are part of a broader legal pattern faculty critics say is sweeping the state. The lawsuit is joined by the ACLU of Texas, with lawyers arguing the policy did not arise in isolation.
