The American Association of University Professors and four faculty members sued the Texas A&M University System over new restrictions on teaching race and gender topics. The complaint alleges the system’s policy amounts to unconstitutional censorship of academic matters and violates faculty free speech and due process rights. Texas A&M revised its approach last fall to bar courses that “advocate race or gender ideology” and related topics in core offerings, while claiming exceptions can be approved for certain graduate and non-core courses through university president review. Plaintiffs argue enforcement discretion is “virtually unfettered” and has produced uneven cancellations and altered syllabi. The lawsuit points to examples described in the complaint where instructors faced limits on readings and content related to LGBTQ+ rights, race and systemic racism perspectives, and course materials that include disfavored viewpoint framing. AAUP and participating faculty seek a federal court order blocking the restrictions and restoring cancelled courses.
