The U.S. Department of Education said it terminated civil-rights agreements reached under prior administrations that were intended to protect transgender students in five school districts and a college, removing the department’s role in enforcing the settlement terms. The affected districts include Cape Henlopen (Delaware), Fife (Washington), Delaware Valley (Pennsylvania), and multiple districts and a college in California, including La Mesa-Spring Valley, Sacramento City Unified, and Taft College. The department previously interpreted Title IX to encompass protections for transgender and gay students, but under the Trump administration it has penalized schools attempting gender-identity accommodations, including in girls’ and women’s sports. Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Kimberly Richey said the action reflects efforts to remove “unnecessary and unlawful burdens” linked to prior administrations’ “transgender agenda.” The announcement is framed as the first known instance of the administration terminating civil-rights settlements tied to investigations.
