The U.S. Department of Education began outsourcing parts of special education oversight and civil rights enforcement to other federal agencies, including the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Justice. The move is tied to four interagency agreements and advances the administration’s plan to dismantle the Education Department. Under the new structure, HHS takes over the Education Department office overseeing special education and employment programs for adults with disabilities. DOJ will handle the Office for Civil Rights’s responsibilities, including civil rights enforcement, student privacy enforcement, and related equity assistance centers. Advocates warned the changes could erode protections and increase uncertainty for students and families. Education Department officials said the partnership will not affect discrimination claims, but implementation details—such as staffing for DOJ—remain in flux as the transition unfolds.
