The U.S. Department of Justice alleged UCLA’s David Geffen School of Medicine “intentionally selected applicants based on their race” in violation of federal civil-rights law and the Supreme Court’s 2023 ban on race-conscious admissions. In a findings letter, DOJ civil-rights officials said the medical school illegally preferred Black and Hispanic applicants by requiring questions that, in effect, prompt applicants to disclose group membership and its impact. DOJ also pointed to the medical school’s effort to work around the 2023 ruling. UCLA’s medical school said its process is merit-based and reflects a comprehensive review, and it argued it remains committed to equal opportunity while complying with federal and state law. The case matters for medical and professional admissions because it adds another enforcement risk for selective, highly structured application pipelines in a post-affirmative-action environment.
