After the Trump administration cut $95 million in federal research funding tied to the University of Connecticut and UConn Health, Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont announced $35 million in state funding to help close the gap for research programs. Lamont said the state is acting through a $500 million contingency fund created to support human service programs affected by sweeping federal reductions. UConn interim leadership described continued disruption across federal research priorities, including terminations of programs tied to agencies such as NIH, NSF, and the Department of Energy. While the state appropriation is less than half of the federal reduction, UConn faculty said it functions as an immediate lifeline intended to protect research continuity and integrity. UConn interim vice president for research Lindsay DiStefano said the past 15 months have brought unprecedented policy and budget shocks to the research enterprise. The announcement underscores how state governments are increasingly stepping in as federal funding becomes less predictable for research-heavy campuses and affiliated hospitals.
