The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill told faculty leaders it will not sign the Trump administration’s proposed “Compact for Academic Excellence,” a federal offer that linked preferential funding to restrictive admissions, hiring, tuition freezes and caps on international enrollment. Chancellor Lee Roberts said the institution has not received a formal invitation but would decline the compact as written, noting some provisions are already being practiced on campus while others would be “difficult or impossible.” Several elite institutions previously rebuffed the compact; only two small institutions have indicated willingness to sign so far.
