The University of North Carolina System adopted a policy classifying course syllabi as public records effective Jan. 15 and will require instructors to post searchable syllabi beginning in the 2026‑27 academic year. Each posted syllabus must include course description, assessment methods and required materials, plus a statement that readings represent diverse scholarly perspectives. The move follows large public records requests from advocacy groups and divergent campus responses earlier in the year; UNC leadership framed the policy as a consistent transparency rule across its 16 campuses. Faculty governance bodies and academic freedom advocates have raised concerns about intellectual property and instructional autonomy; UNC said instructor names and contact details will not be included in the public postings.
