More than 800 math professors in the University of California system called on UC leaders to reinstate SAT/ACT testing requirements for applicants to STEM majors, arguing that math preparation gaps have widened within shared classrooms. The faculty cite a UC San Diego Senate-Administration Workgroup finding that students with math skills below middle-school level grew nearly 30-fold since UC suspended standardized testing. The professors’ letter says instructors now face extreme retraining demands—re-teaching middle-school math while simultaneously covering prerequisite material for sciences, engineering, economics, and other quant-heavy fields. They argue UC resources are finite and that the gaps are no longer within reach of support alone. UC officials told the Los Angeles Times they plan to focus on strengthening instruction, collaboration, and support, while system academic leaders have flagged the concerns and asked the admissions board to address readiness topics. A system admissions board meeting is scheduled for June 5, making this a near-term decision point for UC admissions and placement policy.
