The National Student Clearinghouse’s early fall snapshot shows undergraduate enrollment is up for a third straight year, but the rise masks major shifts in fields of study and student demographics. Undergraduate enrollment grew 2.4% overall, but computer and information sciences saw steep declines — a 7.7% fall at four-year undergraduates and much larger drops at the graduate level. The clearinghouse noted increases in health and trade-focused majors, and rising enrollments among Hispanic, Black and multiracial students. Researchers cautioned the data are preliminary and that final figures due in January may alter the picture.
