An Instructure survey found that 90% of college students report using AI in class at least occasionally, while 61% of instructors report similar use. Despite widespread usage, only 11% of higher ed instructors said they received comprehensive AI training; 41% reported no formal training. Instructure said educators want hands-on training, clear institutional guidance, and ongoing professional development. Survey respondents also expressed concern that AI can sound confident when it is wrong and that overreliance may erode critical thinking and deep learning. The findings reflect how AI has shifted from a policy discussion to a day-to-day classroom expectation. For higher education leaders, the key issue is no longer adoption—it is implementation: policy clarity, training, and assessment redesign so that AI use does not hollow out learning outcomes.
