Sonoma State University will relaunch NCAA Division II athletics after budget cuts eliminated sports in the prior cycle. The university said it will field teams in 10 Division II sports beginning in the 2027–28 academic year, after outcry and a lawsuit followed the June 2025 decision to cut athletics amid a $24 million deficit. The relaunch is supported by a combination of state help and a feasibility study that concluded athletics could support enrollment, Title IX compliance, school spirit, and community engagement. Sonoma State also cited a one-time $8 million injection tied to restarting athletics and use of student-fee revenue suggested by the feasibility team. The reversal comes after Sonoma State subsequently stabilized parts of its academic offerings, including revived physics, geology, and a history master’s program. For higher-ed leaders, the case is a close watch on whether athletics investments can serve as a lever for enrollment and philanthropy once financial conditions improve—and how litigation risk affects governance decisions during crisis budgeting.
