The University of Florida presidential search committee named University of Alabama President Stuart Bell as the sole finalist, signaling a shift toward a veteran red-state flagship leader after turbulence involving prior hires. The committee’s decision is the latest political test for UF’s governance, fundraising expectations, and campus climate. Bell’s nomination comes after UF spent more than a year without a permanent president following Ben Sasse’s July 2024 departure and after the board rejected Santa Ono in June 2025. Search committee chair Rahul Patel said the recommendation was unanimous and pointed to Bell’s track record in enrollment, student outcomes, national rankings, and R1 research attainment. Conservative scholars and policy advocates, however, criticized Bell’s record on diversity, equity, and inclusion, including his oversight of a 2019 advisory committee and 2020 recommendations targeting underrepresented student enrollment and inclusive campus culture. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis praised Bell’s selection as UF’s next step for “new heights.”
