The University of Iowa announced plans to recommend closing six undergraduate majors and one master’s program following a state‑mandated review focused on workforce alignment and enrollment thresholds. Provost Kevin Kregel told the Board of Regents that several programs—among them women’s studies, applied physics, multiple language majors and both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in African American studies—fell below the system’s minimum enrollment markers. UI will seek formal approval for the cuts at an April board meeting. Administrators stressed some courses will remain available through other majors and that program consolidation or mergers are being pursued where possible to preserve instructional capacity while addressing fiscal and workforce alignment concerns.
