Clarke University in Iowa says a $5 million donation from alumna Honmai Goodman and her husband Joseph will eliminate the institution’s long-term debt, while the university’s broader academic restructuring proceeds. The gift is intended to cover bonds worth just under $5 million as of May 2024 financial statements. Clarke previously announced restructuring that included eliminating programs and staff roles, and said 92% of enrolled students would not be affected by the program cuts. Planned shutdowns include undergraduate areas such as English, digital media studies, environmental studies, graphic design, health, music, food science, philosophy, religious studies, and Spanish, alongside the arts education master’s and a nursing practice doctorate. The university also plans to cut 23 faculty positions and 12 to 14 staff positions via attrition, and it suspended retirement contributions to reduce costs. Enrollment had declined to 962 in fall 2024, down nearly 20% from a decade earlier, with 240 new students admitted last fall, according to federal data.
