The University of Denver announced a major academic reorganization that consolidates five schools and colleges into two and eliminates five departments while maintaining affected programs. DU officials said the move is intended to reduce silos and improve flexibility for students amid recent budget pressures. DU reported a projected deficit of up to $30 million and said its fiscal 2027 balanced budget relies on leaving some staff positions vacant and cutting expenses. The plan also includes merging graduate units (social work, professional psychology, and education) into a new college focused on education, behavioral and clinical sciences, and combining engineering and computer science with natural sciences and mathematics and kinesiology and sport studies. The changes include eliminating religious studies and electrical and computer engineering departments, with three additional departments voluntarily closing. DU plans to launch searches for deans for the two new colleges, which signals a governance and workforce planning challenge for faculty and staff across affected academic units.
