The U.S. Department of Education announced the Accreditation, Innovation, and Modernization (AIM) negotiated rulemaking to rewrite federal policies on accreditor recognition and related quality-assurance rules, CHEA briefed institutional leaders. The initiative will examine whether accreditation contributes to credential inflation, transfer-of-credit policies, and safeguards against undue influence, among other issues. CHEA and campus leaders were urged to nominate negotiators and prepare for two five-day sessions in April and May; the rulemaking could alter accreditor authority, transfer standards, and data-driven accountability that affect federal aid eligibility. Institutions are being advised to engage directly as the draft rules could reshape how accreditors and campuses demonstrate student outcomes.
