Senator Elizabeth Warren asked the Education Department’s Office of Inspector General to investigate the agreements that transfer ED grant programs to other federal agencies and whether the department complied with law and transparency obligations. Warren said layoffs and agency transfers have harmed borrower services and left students vulnerable to discrimination and predatory actors. In a letter to the OIG, Warren detailed repeated, incomplete responses from the department and requested review of decisions behind the March and October staffing reductions. She also asked the inspector general to examine how officials chose employees for layoffs. Education Secretary Linda McMahon maintains the moves are lawful and that ED retains control over program execution despite administrative shifts.
