The U.S. Department of Justice extended the compliance deadline for a 2024 web accessibility rule that requires public colleges and K-12 systems to meet ADA-related standards for digital content. The interim final rule pushes the deadline for covered entities in counties/cities of 50,000+ residents from April 24, 2026 to April 26, 2027, with smaller entities now facing April 26, 2028. The extension was framed as necessary after education stakeholders warned that meeting the original dates would require substantial resources, vendor coordination, and systemwide updates across websites, mobile apps, social media, and digital textbooks. Postsecondary institutions had been nearing the enforcement window for updated technical requirements under WCAG 2.1 Level AA. The DOJ cited concerns raised by organizations including the Software & Information Industry Association and higher-education groups that had asked for delays or clearer guidance. Advocates said the extra year is not a pause, but an opportunity to ensure compliance can be achieved sustainably across complex institutional digital environments.
