Syracuse University is offering early retirement packages to about 175 faculty members as it reduces academic programs, according to a message from Provost Lois Agnew. The buyouts are aimed at faculty with at least 35 years of service and others tied to programs slated for closure or with low enrollment. The voluntary buyout option allows eligible faculty to retire in August, with a financial incentive described as two weeks’ pay for every year of benefits-eligible work at Syracuse, capped at fiscal 2026 salary. The university said it aims to use tenure-track hires to replace some faculty where retirement aligns with ongoing instructional needs. The move follows Syracuse’s earlier plan to cut nearly 100 academic programs, which university leadership framed as efforts to refocus offerings on student demand rather than a direct response to immediate budget pressure.
