Yale University faculty are mobilizing against a potential settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice tied to admissions allegations involving Asian and white applicants, with the Yale chapter of the American Association of University Professors warning that any compromise could trigger further action. Five attorneys from Sher Tremonte, representing the Yale AAUP chapter pro bono, sent a letter to Yale President Maurie McInnis urging the university to reject DOJ demands and arguing the agency’s cited evidence is “flimsy.” The faculty group says it may pursue legal challenges to block any agreement before the government proves its claims. AAUP chapter President Daniel Martinez HoSang said what happens at Yale could become a “blueprint for political pressure on colleges and universities,” pointing to Department of Justice letters sent to medical schools elsewhere. Yale did not confirm settlement details, citing standard practice not to discuss ongoing legal matters, while reiterating commitments to free expression, academic freedom, and admissions practices under the law.
