Yale AAUP faculty leaders have pledged to challenge a potential settlement with the Trump administration after Department of Justice scrutiny of the university’s admissions practices. In a letter to Yale President Maurie McInnis, Sher Tremonte attorneys representing the Yale AAUP chapter argued the government’s evidence is insufficient and urged the university to resist any settlement demands. AAUP chapter president Daniel Martinez HoSang said in an interview that a legal effort would aim to block a deal before the government proves its claims, warning that accepting a settlement could set a “blueprint” for future political pressure on colleges. Yale’s spokesperson said the university will not discuss specifics of ongoing matters, while also reiterating commitments to free expression and academic freedom. The dispute highlights how faculty governance is increasingly mobilizing around federal enforcement efforts affecting admissions.
